Rules For Responsive Web Design

1. Don’t Focus Exclusively On Linear Scaling

As a website designer, you must not focus exclusively on squishing the site or seeing if the site looks fat or skinny while changing its orientation. You must design a site which is browser-friendly as well as phone-friendly. After all, that’s what responsive website design is about!

2. No Shortcuts

Let me be very honest. Responsive web design is an intricate task but many people think it’s not that difficult. They try to convert their websites into a responsive one by adding some elements or functionalities to it. But, it doesn’t work that way. Moreover, not everyone with web designing skills can adapt to the new ‘responsive’ platform smoothly. Hence, it is better to look for professionals who can inspect the existing UI of a website and infer on whether that site can be converted into a responsive one. I would personally suggest designers to avoid adding new designs into an existing website because that’s going to complicate things further. This means there are no shortcuts when it comes to responsive web designing.

If you are looking for an easy way out, you can try prototyping your wireframes. This is going to help you save your valuable time. There are many websites that can help you design prototypes quickly, without professional aid. However, having said that, I would opine it’s not enough for designing a good responsive website; it is only going to simplify things to a certain level.

3. Accept Changes

If you are a professional web designer who has been in this industry for a few years, you will know how fast everything changes in the world of web. Before, only 2-3 tools were needed for developing a website but now designers use multiple programs for building websites. My point is – things are going to change with time and as a designer you just need to accept and move on. You cannot stick to old methods for designing something new. When it comes to responsive web designing, you will need to change your conventional design approaches. You must find alternatives for designing communicative graphics. CSS preprocessors are very useful in responsive designing approach.
