Have you ever been harassed by your driver or as a driver have you ever been harassed by a passenger and reported without any evidence to prove your innocence? Well, Uber has just announced the launch of emergency in-app support for riders and drivers in Nigeria and they’re in partnership with Sety.

Uber is using Technological advancement to improve the safety of riders and drivers and we’re here for it. They also announced launching Audio Recording soon in Nigeria.

Tope Akinwunmi, Uber’s representative and Manager for Uber in Nigeria talked about the company putting the safety of its users first, in an event that took place in Lagos. Tope Akinwunmi said, “Safety is at the heart of what we do at Uber, and over the years, we have invested heavily in technology and other measures to help keep drivers and riders safe on the platform”.

The CEO of Sety, Nnamdi Melie was also present at this event, he emphasized the need to enhance the safety of customers, “Sety is proud to partner with Uber in Nigeria, in empowering riders and drivers with our on-trip emergency response service. Our collaboration with Uber underscores our shared commitment to prioritizing and utilizing digital technology to enhance the safety of our customers and partners, thus ensuring the well-being of all Nigerians as a whole” he said.

How to Access the Safety Toolkit

  • Tap the shield icon on the app’s map screen.
  • Tap on “Emergency Assistance”, which will allow you to see your GPS location, car make and model, and license plate.
  • Tap on the ” Call Security” button to talk to a private emergency service and security responder.

After you talk to a responder during an emergency call the details become available to them digitally and can be used to respond to your emergency. Uber’s customer support team will also check in to see if you’re doing okay after the ride.

Uber’s future addition, which is the audio recording, will allow drivers and riders to record and share audio of their trip to use as evidence in case of any altercation. This feature has been tested in South Africa already.

With these features, the drivers and riders’ safety are guaranteed.
