If you’ve been using smartphones and devices, or even have come across people using these handheld devices, there’s no doubt that you can tell that Android devices are more in number than their iOS counterparts. Hence the article for today, why are Android smartphones more popular right now than the iPhones and iPads.
First off, iOS was released to the public (that is the first iPhone) in June 2007, and since then, Apple has put out great devices into the market and have won the hearts of many, making people associate the brand with quality. On the other hand, the first commercially available Android smartphone was the HTC Dream released in October the following year (2008). Now, what made Android take over the mobile market share? Was it about it being the new kid in the block or were they things done better on this OS? Let’s find out.
Why Android Devices are More Popular Than iPhones
1. Android is Free
Since the day this operating system was released to the wild, Google made it clear that the OS would be entirely free and hence anyone could slap it on their device whatsoever. This is something not obtainable in the iOS world as their operating system is legally limited to run only on their hardware. Hence manufacturers around the globe have Android as an option for their device.
2. Customization
If you’ve ever had to use any other mobile operating system (Blackberry, Windows, iOS), you’d understand how customization on Android comes in so quickly as compared to these other platforms.
You can even take things a notch by rooting your android and take the customization games further. The truth is, the extent to which you can customize android is limited to your imagination as long as you know what you are doing.

3. Android is Open Source
When software is said to be open source, we know that the source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. With this in mind, we know that this nature of the Android operating system has attracted lots of developers who all have the passion for making the OS a better one, and you should know that there is power in number.
With lots of developers and manufacturers in this space, we tend to get the best of this operating system’s world. We see lots of features added daily, new mods and so on. This is one reason, many developers still stick to this platform, and that brings me to the next point.
4. Lots of Apps
I’m in no way trying to say that there are no apps on the Apple’s Store, in fact, there were about 2 million apps in Apple’s App Store in the first quarter of 2018 and that’s a whole lot. But when compared to Google’s Play Store, that’s just about half of what’s here. I know most people would say there are lots of apps on the Play Store that perform the same function, but that’s the fun of it. You have options to pick from. In case you didn’t know, in the first quarter of 2018, there were 3.8 million apps on the Play store.

5. Android Devices Are Cheaper
When compared to iPhones, you for sure know that these devices are cheaper. Anyone could go into the mobile market and find a device running the Android OS that fits their budget.
With lots of manufacturers, there a heated competition for the customers, hence everyone wants to give the public value for their bucks.
You have a whole lot of options every year, unlike the iOS where you are limited to a few devices per year. Cheaper means, it gets into more hands and thus the popularity of Android.
There you have it. There are a whole bunch of reasons one could still think about, but these are some of the strong points as to why the Android operating system is more popular than iOS.
