On December 8 Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced before a Senate subcommittee that the company is working on bringing back the old chronological feed. Back in 2010, the application organized its feed chronologically but with the surge in the number of users, it became difficult for users to view everything on their feed.
In 2016, Instagram introduced the algorithmically sorted feed which uses AI to sort the feed based on user preferences and activity. It was updated in 2017 to include recommended posts.
On Friday, Adam Mosseri took part in a series of QandA on Instagram stories, to answer people’s queries about the return of the chronological feed. Based on his answers, apparently, the company is experimenting with two versions, the first version will offer users the option to choose favorites and it will be visible at the top.

The other version will show contents to users in a purely chronological format. Users will be able to view content from everyone they follow in chronological order.
However, Adam clarified that though the company is reintroducing the chronological feed, the current algorithmic feed will not be discontinued. Users will be given the option to choose which type of feed they want; this will give users more control over their content experience. The plan is to release the chronological feed feature in early 2022.
