The reason you are reading this post right now is most likely because you are trying to fill an online form and you were asked to input your Postal Code, not knowing exactly what to fill in, you landed on this page. Well, let’s have a brief look at what both the ZIP and Postal Codes are all about.
ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan. It is a system used by the United States Postal Service since 1963 for the same purpose as Postal Codes are used in other countries. This means that ZIP codes are only used in the United States while other countries refer to this pattern as Postal Codes.
One mistake most people make while filling online forms in Nigeria is using the Nigeria Phone Country Code (+234) otherwise known as the International Dialing Code to fill in for the Postal or ZIP codes when prompted for such. In fact, I actually made the same mistake quite some years back.
The Correct Postal or Zip Code for Nigeria
Now, whenever you are asked to fill in your country ZIP or Postal Code, you actually are not meant to start search say, Lagos Postal Code, Abuja Zip Code, Port Harcourt Postal Code or any other city or state’s postal code. All you need do is fill in the Postal Code that is Internationally allocated to Nigeria. You can make use of 110001, 23401 or 00176. Any of these would work or at least one would work in your situation.
Now coming back home. The Nigerian postal code which is designed by NIPOST (Nigerian Postal Service) is usually made up of 6 digits. NIPOST divided the country into 9 regions, therefore you might have to see a postal code in Nigeria starting from 1 through 9. The second and third digits, when combined with the first digit, it refers to the dispatch district for outgoing sorting. Now talking about the last three digits, it refers to the exact location in the region where the post is to be made.
So, when you are asked to fill in your local postal code for instance on websites within Nigeria or services that need to make a delivery to your very location, you can then start looking for your city’s or State’s postal or zip code as some might still refer to it (Remember, it’s referred to as ZIP code only in the US).
Let’s have an example here
