Huawei has finally released their much-anticipated smartphone device called the Huawei Mate 20 Pro which seems to follow after our favorite phone for 2018 the P20 Pro.
The 6.39 inches device, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro which was launched this October 2018, has all eyes fixed in the general direction of the P20 Pro to see if it can do the seemingly impossible.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes along with the latest processor, a longer lasting battery that we’ve never seen in any Huawei phone and a bunch of other great futures that will be later reviewed in this article.
Design
When you take your first glance at the Mate 20 Pro, it has a striking resemblance with the Samsung Galaxy S9+. But, though they both are similar, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro still features some amazing designs that make it unique, like the fingerprint sensor that is usually at the back, is no longer visible but has been translated to an on-screen fingerprint scanner and even the finishing touches and the color choices of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro seems to be more exciting than that of Samsung.
This device has a display size of 6.39 inches, 100.2 cm2, and an 87.9% screen-to-body ratio. It also has a resolution of about 1440 x 3120 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~538 ppi density).
The Mate 20 Pro has an obvious notch and comes with a curved OLED screen, that has a symmetrical and subtle fold to all part of the edge of this device and this includes both front and back, giving you that makes comfortable feel when you hold the device in your hand.
Coming to the back of this device you will find out that there are diagonal lines are etched into the screen and the called it the ‘Hyper Optical Pattern’ design, the lines are subtle, so the only way to feel the texture is by using your fingernail to run over it.
Still, at the back of this device, you will see a set of three camera lenses that are arranged in a square shape and positioned at the center. Unlike most Huawei devices the Mate 20 Pro features a very responsive in-screen fingerprint scanner that reads with accuracy.
Should in case you don’t feel like using the fingerprint scanner, there are other security features that the Mate 20 Pro has, like the 3D Face Unlock, which is the latest version that comes with a series of sensors like the dot projector, proximity, illuminator, IR camera, and main 24MP camera. I hope you have seen the reason this device has a big notch.
Camera
At the back of the Mate 20 Pro is seated three camera sensors Leica (all color, no mono) 40MP wide-angle f/1.8, 20MP ultrawide-angle f/2.2 and finally the 8MP tele f/2.4.
The 40-megapixels has a wide-angle lens, used as the standard, nevertheless, the 20-megapixel features an ultra-wide lens that is 0.6x, which serves well for a broader view, finally there is an 8-megapixel lens which is used for zooming without degradation.
At the front of this device is a single camera sensor of 24MP which can be used with sensors for 3D Face Unlock.
The Mate 20 Pro camera comes with a Master AI (artificial intelligence) mode with ‘brains’ that auto-recognize scenes and adjust the settings accordingly. When the AI of the camera works fine, it pumps the colors, levels the exposure and even causes most scenes to actually look great on the phone’s screen.
The quality of the images produced is often outstanding. Even shots that are taken in low-light still retains enough detail than any competitor that we are yet to see, nevertheless the Google Pixel 3 will surely be heading for the crown.
To summarize it all, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro camera is quite exciting, with its superb quality and speedy functionality, with a lot of other great features that are combined to show that Huawei is really in for business.
Performance
Coming down to the performance of the Mate 20 Pro. This device is actually the first of its kind to feature Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor, which is the Huawei’s competitor for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, with the former paying attention to a different division of cores and arranged in a hierarchy like the ‘big, medium, little’ in other to share the workload, coupled with the dual Neural Processing Units to play the role of a brain of this device and to step up the games of the artificial intelligence (AI), sharing the workload for various tasks. The performance is so arranged in a way that they are all aiming for efficiency.
One certainty, however, is that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is far superior to it’a lite version. On a performance level, the performance is way higher and better than it’s Lite version. Everything about the Huawei mate 20 pro is simply just fast and smooth to operate. It does not matter whether you’re opening any game app, Camera app, or simply loading multiple browser tabs, or dipping in and out of emails, the Mate 20 pro runs smoothly without slacking.
Speaking on the GPU Turbo, to unlock some additional graphics support for certain games (you should know that not everything is 100% compatible, since it totally depends on the developers to get on board) e.g, PUBG Mobile, South Park, Phone Destroyer, which has run smoothly on this device without getting too hot.
Wait, do you know that this was run when the domain is just in ‘normal’ mode. Want more from the Huawei Mate 20 pro for heavier gaming? Here’ how to turbocharge this device to give you it’s maximum power.
Within the battery settings, there’s the option to activate ‘performance’ mode, and once you decide to activate Performance Mode, you will get a warning which stats ‘battery usage and device heat may increase’. That warning is true, once activated, I discovered that the heat is much more noticeable from the back of the device. But hey, don’t be afraid of anything, it is not going to cook your fingers. But I personally think that it is good to have this ‘booster’ mode available on demand.
On a final conclusion, this smartphone delivers very strong day-to-day performance for those who may use it on a daily basis. It does not matter whether it involves work, gaming or a combination of both work and gaming, the Mate 20 Pro is powerfully built to combine and run both smoothly, and this is done with longevity from that battery.
From the review we run, we’ve been seeing around 50 percent battery use for over 12 hours, meaning that the Huawei manufacturers did not lie when they say it’s a 24hour battery. When we decide to put the Mate 20 pro through a 24 hours usage after charging it to 100% battery Power. I discover that after a full day’s work, I decided to go on a long gaming session, and to my utmost surprise, at bedtime, I discovered that I have around 45 percent battery remaining.
Battery
The Mate 20 Pro features a Qi wireless charging as a result of the all-glass build of this device, although when you buy this device there is no wireless charger in the box. There is yet another great news, it doesn’t just end at the wireless charging, but with the Mate 20 Pro, you can charge-up other Qi devices by simply placing it back to back, like the iPhone X and other Qi devices.
The wireless charging is not the fastest method to power up the 4,200mAh battery, but with the USB-C cable you can power up the device much faster than the wireless charging. Because with the SuperCharge fast-charging 40w, you can power the Mate 20 Pro from zero percent to 70 percent full within 30 minutes.
