Anime Games for Android: Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece

Seventeen official anime games on Google Play, from Dragon Ball to Haikyu, with the publisher, cost, age rating and connection each one needs.

Almost every official anime game on Google Play is free to install and makes its money from gacha: random draws for characters, which you can pay to repeat. The clear exception is Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm. Bandai Namco sells it for $12.99, and its listing says that after the first download you can play offline.

If you would rather pay nothing, choose by the series you follow. Dragon Ball, One Piece, Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia all have official games on the store.

We kept only games whose Google Play listing presents them as the official game of the series, and the descriptions below come from those listings. Fan-made lookalikes are left out.

What free means here

All fifteen free games carry Google Play’s “In-app purchases” label. On thirteen of them the rating details add “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)”, which is the store’s way of saying gacha. The other two, Dokkan Battle and Treasure Cruise, say it in Bandai Namco’s own summary: “includes random-item purchases”. KLab’s Bleach listing uses the word gacha itself.

So expect the same deal in each one. You install for nothing and collect characters through draws, and the game sells you more draws. Decide what you are willing to spend before you start. If a child uses the phone, turn on purchase verification in Google Play, which can ask for a password or fingerprint before every purchase.

Games you pay for once

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm

A 3D fighting game that Bandai Namco has brought to phones. Ultimate Mission Mode retells the story and battles of Naruto’s childhood and lets you walk around the Hidden Leaf Village between missions. Free Battle Mode has 25 fighters and 10 support characters.

The listing is plain about the connection: single-player only, no online battles, and offline play once the game has downloaded. You need the internet again only to back up or move your save. It asks for at least 3.5GB of free space.

It costs $12.99 in the US, ₹1,299 in India, ₦19,900 in Nigeria and £12.99 in the UK. Bandai Namco gives no refunds and warns of a display glitch and crashes on some phones, so read its compatibility notes before you buy.

Bandai Namco’s free Naruto games have gone. We could find neither Ultimate Ninja Blazing nor Naruto x Boruto Ninja Voltage on Google Play.

Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story

Kairosoft’s management game has you run a sweets shop with Doraemon, with characters from Fujiko F. Fujio’s other works turning up as customers. It is $14.99 in the US, ₹1,250 in India and ₦24,500 in Nigeria. The listing also says it is free with a Google Play Pass subscription.

Inside a Crunchyroll membership

Crunchyroll publishes a shelf of games for its paying members, among them Shin chan: Shiro & Coal Town and a PSYCHO-PASS game. The listings say they are only for Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan members. They cost nothing extra if you already pay for that, and they are not a reason to subscribe on their own.

Dragon Ball

Dokkan Battle is the gentler of the three. Battles are a puzzle in which you link Ki Spheres to attack, and the listing says you can take your time and play at your own pace.

Dragon Ball Legends is 3D fighting with card-based controls, more than 400 fighters and live one-on-one matches against other players. Its story follows Shallot, a new character designed by Akira Toriyama. It also sells a monthly subscription called the Legends Pass.

Gekishin Squadra is four-against-four team battles, filed by Google Play under MOBA and playable with people on PC and console. The listing says it is played mainly through online matches.

One Piece

Treasure Cruise is the one for the story. It is a turn-based RPG with tap-timing attacks that follows One Piece from the beginning, with more than 2,000 characters to recruit.

Bounty Rush is a different kind of game: two teams of four fight in real time to grab the most treasure. It needs other players, so it needs a connection.

Other action series

  • Bleach: Brave Souls: a 3D hack-and-slash game from KLab with story quests, guilds and co-op for up to four players.
  • Jujutsu Kaisen Phantom Parade: an RPG published by BILIBILI that replays the anime’s story with full voice acting and adds team battles against cursed spirits.
  • MHA: United Survival: KLab’s listing calls it the official licensed game of My Hero Academia. You take a squad of three against hordes of enemies, and each run plays out differently.
  • Hunter × Hunter Nen × Survivor: the same idea of surviving waves of enemies, built for one hand and short sessions, with an auto mode. The listing shows the publisher’s name, Bushiroad, in Japanese.
  • The Seven Deadly Sins: Netmarble’s listing uses the fuller name Grand Cross. Battles are turn-based and played with skill cards, and the story is retold in 3D.
  • SAO Integral Factor: an online RPG in which you are a player trapped in Aincrad beside Kirito and Asuna. It also sells a monthly subscription called Boost Mode. The Nigerian store page showed us no Install button.
  • Saint Seiya Awakening: a hero-collecting strategy RPG that its listing says is licensed by Kurumada Productions. It was on our old list.

Sports and card games

  • Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team: KLab’s football game. You build a team and play ranked matches online, with the special shots from the manga.
  • Haikyu!! Fly High: a volleyball RPG from Garena with the anime’s original voice cast. The US and UK store pages had an Install button and the Indian and Nigerian ones showed us none, so it may not be offered there.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links: KONAMI’s card duels, with a beginner’s guide and a deck that builds itself. The listing has a section called “Offline Battles”, meaning duels against the series’ characters. It does not say the game runs without a connection, so do not count on it.

What happened to our old picks

  • Dragon Ball Legends and Saint Seiya Awakening: still on Google Play and covered above.
  • Attack on Titan Tactics, RWBY: Amity Arena, Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag, Tales of Erin, Tokyo Ghoul: re birth and Ultimate Ninja Blazing: we could not find any of the six on Google Play. The Tokyo Ghoul game there now is Tokyo Ghoul · Break the Chains from FunCat Games.

Six gone out of ten is the thing to remember about online licensed games. Nothing in a listing promises that what you buy will outlast the game.

Which one to pick

  • Offline, with nothing more to buy: Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm.
  • Dragon Ball at your own pace: Dokkan Battle.
  • Dragon Ball against other people: Dragon Ball Legends.
  • One Piece for the story: Treasure Cruise.
  • A few minutes at a time: Hunter × Hunter Nen × Survivor.
  • For a younger player: Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story, which has no purchases inside it. Captain Tsubasa and Haikyu are rated Everyone but both sell random items.
