3 years back, I wanted to purchase a Chromebook that I could make use of on business travel. I wished for something light to move about with on a daily basis and cheap enough that I will not panic when I pour my tea on the keyboard. I was looking at a couple of models when the seller approached me and said, “You don’t know? These are Chromebooks, right? They only work online; you can’t save any files to the hard drive.” In this article, you will learn how to save and retrieve files on Chrome.

I know these sellers are allowed to make this mistake once in a while, yes, but it is becoming too common.

how to save and retrieve files on Chrome

It is true that Chromebooks were launched to be online most of the time. In fact, when the very first Chrome OS laptops were unveiled 8 years ago, there were very few applications that could be used offline, and this was a big problem. But that was in the past and this is the present.

Presently, applications like Google Docs and Sheets can be useful both online and off. Plus, you will be able to save files locally to the PC’s SSD or, with a few models and an SD memory card.

Have you just purchased your first Chromebook? Or you are contemplating doing this? See below for how to save your files on your Chromebook and find them again.

1. Save Your Files

Saving a file in a Chromebook is just like saving a file in macOS or Windows. It can be done by adhering to these instructions

  1. Press Ctrl + S
  2. Right-click on the picture or file you wish to save and choose “Save as…”

Both instructions will reveal the Files application. Choose which folder you wish to save your file in from the listing on the left, and then tap “Save.” You can even save and retrieve files from Google Drive.

The Files app comes preloaded with a Downloads folder, but you can seamlessly create your personal folders, tap the “New Folder” button on the bottom left corner.

Find Your Files

To locate your saved files, below is all you should do:

  1. Tap the Launcher button in the bottom left corner of the display.
  2. An apps window will be visible from the bottom of the screen. If you have used the Files app hours or minutes ago, you will see it under the search field with other recently used applications. Tap it.
  3. Or, tap the “up” arrow just above the search field to view every app in your Chromebook, and tap on the Files application.

The Files application also instantly organizes your files into Recent, Audio, Images, and Videos folders to make this kind of files simpler to locate.

Bear in mind that even if you can save a decent no of files, several Chromebooks possess a relatively little amount of storage — you should surely expect either 32GB or 64GB, except you are targetting a premium device like Google’s Pixelbook. So same capacity you would need on a regular Mac or Windows system will not be what you are required here. However, you will not be restricted to working online.
