It can be frustrating when you try loading up your WordPress blog and you are welcomed with a
“Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”
error message. Most times this error is as a result of a failed update of a plugin or core automatic upgrade of the WordPress CMS itself and can be easily removed by following the steps below.
Whenever an update is carried out in wordpress (plugin, themes or the CMS itself), a file named “.maintenance” is created in the root folder of your wordpress installation.
For instance, most people might install their blogs in the root of their cPanel hosting. All you need do is access the root folder via either FTP or cPanel’s File manager (i.e public_html directory). Then you have to find the “.maintenance” file.

Simply delete the file and the error would be gone.
