It will amaze you to know that South African 2nd largest mobile telecoms network MTN has announced and in fact officially launched her self owned dual SIM mobile android phone under the nickname Steppa.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon processor powered android device Steppa has a 3.5 inch touch screen display, 2MP camera with video recording, Opera Mini for internet browsing, FM radio, long battery life and comes with a standard free Social Networking Bundle for the first three months. The smartphone has an AVG anti-virus and also provides loss and theft protection through the ability to track and control.

It comes along with a 512MB of RAM, an FM radio and a 1,300mAh battery which is specced to last for up to 627 minutes of talk time. It also features Google Play integration, HSDPA, Bluetooth 3.0 and A-GPS. But one thing I don’t really fancy about this android smartphone is its single-core 1GHz CPU and ships with the Gingerbread version of Android.

We are meant to understand that steppa was currently announced at South Africa for a price rate of R499 which equivalents about $50. This is a nice price for such a device and it’s regarded the cheapest smartphone in the South African mobile market as at time of post.
Won’t this be great if it’s introduced also to Nigerian and other African mobile markets? I guess it would definitely compete with some brands of the Tecno Smartphones.

Hi Sam,
As I included in this review, it’s GingerBread (2.3.5). That’s actually a downside I guess.
Not to worry, afterall android phones can now be upgraded from version 2.3 to 4.0 and I’m quite sure it can be done on this phone too.
They sure can be upgraded by it wont run smoothly on such phones.
ok ave seen it but they shuld ave make d version 4.2
Hope they come up with a better version soon anyway.
I always appreciate your updates keep it up Mr Frank its a wonderful job…but would you teach me how to configure Airtel BlackBerry setting to use it as PC Modem…thank you!!
Hi Mlowoka,
Thanks for your compliment. And talking about configuring your airtel blackberry settings, you simply have to set APN (Access Point) to internet.ng.airtel.com and that’s all you need. You can learn How to Configure your modem here.
So so angry @ the RAM and Andriod version very poor i must say, tecno is a king compared to this dead smart fone.
Ii kinda go with you Dan. This is quite low quality.
The phone is surprisingly cheap. Should be about N8000 – N9000. One of the cheapest Android phone. Where can it be gotten here in Nigeria? Many people will rush this phone. Kudos to MTN.
It was launched in S.A for now and not yet available in other countries as at time of post. we have to wait patiently till then.
Wow! This is gonna be great, imagine the bonuses and capabilties of stuffs that will be utillized on this phone for mtn users.

You might be correct, but for now there’s none. 🙂
Don’t mind MTN they are very greedy and stingy people since they are networking company and have been on the business, why don’t they go for a nice batter Android phone with 4.2 version and some others high stuff on it? At least even if it cost up to #15.000 Naira with some specials things on it, Nigerians will buy with pleasures known fully well its from MTN and also with trust. Thanks
You are right Kolica. We simply hope they come with something better soon.
