The smartphones world is currently on a fast lane. It’s so fast-moving to the extent that one of the Chinese prominent manufactures, Oppo has already released their third model for 2018. And nowadays it seems that Oppo just can’t wait but to continue dishing out new smartphones, and this is coming after the successful release and sales of the R15 and the Find X, so why should they be blamed?
The current edition by OPPO which we will be discussing today is called the R17 and was launched in Shanghai on 23 August. Though, the new smartphone had made available for pre-order on several major Chinese retailers, as well as on the Oppo’s official website, since 18 August, in anticipation of the official release.
There is a video teaser on Oppo’s official Weibo account that also made mention of a sister model called the R17 Pro, though we don’t have much information about it now. The new OPPO R17 is a beefed-up device of the previous models, and it comes with a higher-quality camera and an improved software.

Design
The R15 used to be praised for featuring an attractive design, and it is in the same might that Oppo has built the R17.
The Oppo R17 comes with a 6.4-inch screen that has no bezels on both sides of the device. At the top of the Oppo R17 is a razor-thin bezel that houses the speaker. Also, the ‘water drop’ shaped notch that is located at the top and that contains the selfie camera is now very small compared to that of the R15.
The Oppo R17 have a well-rounded corner and a 91.5% screen-to-body ratio, coupled with an in-display fingerprint scanner which serves as a method of decluttering the main display.
The Oppo R17 will come in only two colors, the Neon Purple and Stream Blue. The smartphone will look different when you view it from different angles. Like the Stream Blue will switch between blue, aqua and green depending on the lighting, meanwhile, the Neon Purple comes with one magenta and one violet edge at the back panel.
The Oppo R17 comes with a 6.4in FHD+ OLED display, which is an upgrade of the predecessor’s 6.3in display. The screen will also feature a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection, which will protect the Oppo R17 against scratches, breakage and most of all, wearing and tearing. Corning made claims that its glass featured on the R17 can withstand 15 drops from a height of one meter
Oppo also made claims that the fingerprint that is seated beneath the R17 consists of a 4mm² sensor and can detect your fingerprint and unlock the phone under one second.
The connectivity that the R17 features are standard, including 4Wi-Fi, G VoLTE, Bluetooth, USB Type-C and GPS/A-GPS.
The R17 which is based on Android’s Oreo 8.1 will come with Color OS 5.2 as its main UI platform and will add more voice-activated features, optimized battery performance, and information panels.
Camera
Coming down to the camera section, on the surface you will notice a big difference between the Oppo R17 and its predecessor, as a result of the 8GB RAM and the new Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 processor which help in boosting the performance of the R17 camera. At the back of the Oppo R17, you will see a dual camera sensor: 16 MP, f/1.8, 25mm (wide) + 5 MP, depth sensor. While at the front of the Oppo R17 is seated a 25 MP, f/2.0 for selfies.
Performance
The Oppo made a serious upgrade on the R17 in other to deliver an improved performance. If you can still remember, the Oppo R15 featured a 6GB which was great at that time, but now the current Oppo R17 comes with a whopping 8GB RAM that is accompanied by a 128GB internal storage, that is sure to offer you an improved performance.
One good thing about the internal storage of this device is that it will be coupled with the brand-new Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 processor. This new processor will also feature the same digital signal processing that is in the higher-tier mobile platforms like the Qualcomm’s Hexagon 685. The new processor makes it great for AI-powered apps, and will also aid in improving the overall user experience of the Oppo R17’s powerful selfie camera.
The Snapdragon 670 processor also features the Kryo 360 CPU, which has two performance cores of up to 2GHz, and 6 efficiency cores of up to 1.7GHz. The CPU is designed to improve the performance of the R17’s predecessor by up to 15%. This is sure to allow the users of the Oppo R17 to run multiple apps and only sacrifice less battery life.
The Spectra 250 ISP will help achieve premium features in the Oppo R17’s cameras, which includes image stabilization, noise reduction, and active depth sensing. Still on top of the matter, users of the R17 will be able to record Ultra HD video footage even with a 30% less battery than the 670’s predecessor.
Battery
The battery on the new Oppo smartphone is a 3,500mAh battery, which is slightly larger than the 3,450mAh battery that is inside its predecessor. The R17 will also feature the Oppo’s VOOC fast-charging technology which is sure to add an extra two hours to the battery life after just five minutes of charging it.

Oppo R17 Price
There was a great uproar when the price of the Oppo R17 was rumored to be CNY99,999, that is around £11,400. Though the price of smartphones has always increased year by year since their inception, Nevertheless, this one sounded ridiculous.
Thankfully, the original cost of this new device has been uncovered by a technical glitch, and Oppo was able to confirm that with CNY3,499 which is approximately £460 (Approximately N190,000) you can obtain the Oppo R17.
Verdict
The Oppo R17 features a major improvement over its predecessors, and this time it comes with a much better chipset and great performance. The Oppo R17 also features a great 6.4 inches screen with a nice display.
