The World Poker Tour recently announced it will be hosting three different events in Australia this year. The 2022 poker tour will include the country’s first main tour stop after signing a deal with the Star Entertainment Group.
This trio of events will help fans to enjoy more than betting on poker with online gaming, giving you a huge opportunity to roll with the big boys. The World Poker Tour Deep Stacks Sydney will be the first stop in the trio, hosted at The Star. This tournament promises to be the greatest event of the king to be hosted in the Asia Pacific.
The Sydney World Poker Tour will kick off on 30th March, with the Deep Stacks Main Event headlining the 12-tournament schedule. The main event will start from 7th April, before the steeliest operator is crowned several days later on 11th April.
According to an official press release, the $1500 buy-in event will offer three starting flights and the re-entry will be unlimited. For reference, fans can recall the 2021 WPT Deep Stacks Gold Coast that racked up a huge $1,502,550 prize pool with 1,113 entrants.
A Recap of the 2021 WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast
Last year, Will Davies staged an incredible final table comeback, winning the inaugural WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast competition and claiming the prize of $252,729 for first place. The popular tournament director at a prominent poker venue known The Poker Palace in Sydney showed tremendous patience to cruise into the three-handed play against Mike Maddocks and Alex Lynskey.
Davies turned the game in his favor after a big all-in pre-flop hand with Alex Lynskey, where emerged top with an Ace & Jack (A & J) against Lynskey’s Ace and Queen (A & Q). From that point, Lynskey quickly got eliminated and Davies emerged victorious in the first major tournament after a softening-up session against Maddocks.
Besides the huge cash prize, Davies got the honor of winning the world’s largest WPT main event tournament in Asia-Pacific. The tournament featured 1,113 entrants and Davies managed to better 898 players that took part in the 2014 WPT National China. However, the 2021 WPT tournament had the largest prize pool ($1,502,550) in history, exceeding 2019’s WPT Australia amount of $1,480,500.
Key Highlights About the 2022 WPTDeepStacks Sydney
Piggybacking off the success of the 2021 WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast, the 2022 first major poker event in Harbor City is expected to be the region’s largest tournament of this kind. The event buy-in prize of $1500 offers entrants three starting flights with unlimited re-entry. The Sydney schedule will include an opening event with a $750 buy-in, the $5,000 challenge, and the two-day $2,000 event.
Talking ahead of the event, World Poker Tour CEO Adam Pliska said Australian poker players are passionate about the game and their partnership with The Star Entertainment will be a chance to expand their presence there. The Star Sydney will hold the first WPT event in the region, putting Sydney on track to being Australia’s largest poker market.
Sydney is among the world’s most iconic cities and the tournament adds another element to the event’s 20th-anniversary celebration. Fortunately, the event promises to be a huge success as the star has hosted several major names in the music, sports, and entertainment industry. As such, the Star Sydney COO Damian Quayle believes they’re ready to welcome the best poker players in the world.
As the WPT tournament celebrates its 20th anniversary, this event is set to become the world’s best vacation playground for a poker tournament in 2022. The Asia Pacific event will then head North after its inaugural stop in Sydney, with additional two legs hosted at The Star Gold Coast. Fortunately, everyone will get the chance to watch the gameplay (even those who can’t make it to this casino or are banned), by streaming the e3vent’s live broadcast available at WPT YouTube, Twitch Channels, and WPT.com.
