We went through the Infinix listings on Jumia Nigeria. The cheapest phone was ₦154,999, a little over three times a 50k budget. Tecno at least has button phones to fill the gap below that. Infinix has nothing: every one of its listings was a smartphone.

When this page was first published in 2019 it listed ten phones. The Infinix Hot S4, with 3GB of RAM and a 4,000mAh battery, was ₦51,500. The naira has lost most of its value against the dollar since, phones are imported, and the price tags followed.

These were the lowest prices for new Infinix phones on Jumia when we checked.

The Smart 8 is the cheapest, and it is also the oldest phone in the table. For ₦4,800 more, the Smart 20 gives you 4GB of RAM, a 5,200mAh battery and Android 16. That is the one to buy. A phone with 3GB of RAM will feel slow sooner, and ₦4,800 is a small price for avoiding that.

What ₦50,000 can buy instead

1. A used Infinix

A second-hand phone is the only way to an Infinix at this budget, and 50k buys an old one. Used phones are where people get burned, so check these before you hand over money:

• Dial *#06# and make sure the IMEI on the screen matches the one on the box or receipt.
• Put your own SIM in each slot and make a call. Test the speaker, the microphone and the charging port.
• Have the seller reset the phone in front of you. If it then asks for the previous owner’s Google account, walk away. You will not get past that screen.
• Look at a plain white screen and a plain black one for lines, patches or a yellow tint.
• Watch the battery while you test. If it drops several per cent in ten minutes, budget for a new battery or leave it.
• Buy from a shop that will still be there next week, and ask for a receipt.

2. A new phone from another brand

The only new Android device we found under ₦50,000 on Jumia was the itel it9320, at ₦38,500 to ₦45,000 depending on the seller. It has a 2.8-inch touchscreen above a keypad, 4G, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 3,000mAh battery. It will feel small and slow next to a full smartphone, but it does run Android. 3. Wait and save

The gap between ₦50,000 and a new Smart 20 is about ₦110,000. If your current phone still works, saving towards a phone with 4GB of RAM will serve you far longer than spending the 50k now on something you will want to replace within a year.
