For a free action RPG, take Eternium. For a turn-based one, take Vampire’s Fall: Origins. If you want no adverts and nothing to buy at all, Andor’s Trail is the only game here that is free in every sense.
We read the Google Play listing of every game on this page. The first eight say in their own descriptions that they work without a connection. A second group, mostly paid games from our old list, carry Google Play’s “Offline” tag without the developer saying so in words, and we have kept those apart. The descriptions come from the listings.

RPGs whose makers say they play offline
Eternium
An action RPG in the old point-and-click style: you tap to move and draw signs on the screen to cast spells. You play a Mage, a Warrior or a Bounty Hunter through four story worlds, then on into endless generated levels.
Making Fun’s listing says the game can be played offline once the content download has finished, apart from a couple of online-only features. So open it on Wi-Fi first and let it finish. It is free, Google Play shows no adverts flag on it, and the developer says more than nine in ten players never pay.
Vampire’s Fall: Origins
A turn-based RPG set in a dark 2D open world, where you play a vampire and decide whether to be feared or admired. There are three passive skill trees and 53 active abilities to build a character from.
Early Morning Studio’s listing is as clear as anyone’s: the complete adventure works offline, and you go online only for fights against other players. It is free with ads and in-app purchases, and the expansion is included at no charge.
Exiled Kingdoms
A single-player action RPG seen from above, inspired, the developer says, by the classic role-playing games of past decades. You roam its world freely, and the dungeons come with traps and secret doors.
The free version lets you play a Warrior or a Rogue for around 30 hours. One purchase unlocks the full game, which the developer puts at 120 hours or more, with no further payments and no adverts. The listing says internet access is requested only for Google Play Games, and that the game works fine if you refuse it. There is also a separate full version on Google Play at $5.99 in the US.
Andor’s Trail
A turn-based fantasy RPG built by its community and released as open-source software. You search the world of Dhayavar for your brother Andor, across more than 600 maps and 84 quests.
The listing says it plainly: no payment, no ads, no in-app purchases, and no internet access required. It also says the game runs on very old versions of Android. The catch, which the developers state themselves, is that the game is not finished yet.
Moonshades
A 3D dungeon crawler in the manner of the old grid-based games, where you move square by square through dungeons, fight in real time and solve puzzles. BaldrickSoft’s listing says it is playable without an internet connection. It is free with ads and in-app purchases.
Dungeon Ward
An action RPG with generated dungeons, dragons to fight and three classes: warrior, hunter and mage. The listing says it was designed to be played without internet, and it supports a Bluetooth controller. It is free with ads and in-app purchases.
Dungeon Quest
Shiny Box calls this a free-to-play offline action RPG. It is a loot game: random gear, generated dungeons, four acts with a boss at the end of each, and floors that keep getting harder. You pick a Wizard, a Warrior or a Rogue. The listing also mentions Battle Arena leagues for competing with friends, which cannot happen without a connection. It is free with ads and in-app purchases.
Grimvalor
More sword-fighting platformer than classic RPG, but you level a character and upgrade equipment as you go. The first act is free and, by the developer’s count, lasts an hour or two. A single purchase unlocks the other four acts.
Direlight’s feature list includes offline play and calls it perfect for a commute. Saves sync between devices through Google Play when you are connected.

Google Play puts an “Offline” tag on some listings. These five games from our 2019 list carry it, but none of their developers says so in the description. Buy or install on that basis, and try the game with your connection off before you depend on it. The prices are the US ones, and Google Play sets a local price in other countries.
- Crashlands: $6.99 in the US, with no adverts and no in-app purchases. You are a space trucker stranded on an alien planet, crafting, fighting and building a base while you try to get your parcels back.
- Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition: $9.99. The Dungeons & Dragons classic from 2000, with both expansions. Beamdog says it is optimised for tablets and not recommended on screens under seven inches, so this is not one for a phone.
- Evoland: $0.99. An adventure that walks through the history of RPGs, starting in monochrome and ending in full 3D. Our old list described it under the heading Shadowrun Returns, which is a different game.
- Implosion: Never Lose Hope: the first six missions are free and one purchase unlocks the rest. Read the warning on the listing first. Rayark says devices on Android 14 or above may have compatibility problems, and that includes any phone bought new recently.
- Arcane Quest 3: free with ads and in-app purchases. A dice-rolling tactical game in the style of a tabletop adventure. Its real-time multiplayer quests need a connection.
What happened to the rest of the old list
- Shadowrun Returns, Mage Gauntlet and Battleheart Legacy: we could not find any of them on Google Play.
- Inotia 4: still on Google Play, free with ads and in-app purchases. Neither the listing nor Google’s tags say it plays offline, so we cannot promise it.
- Chaos Rings III: still on sale at $19.99. The listing does not say whether it needs a connection, and that is a lot of money to find out.
- Final Fantasy: Square Enix sells remade versions of the early games. The first costs $9.99 and Final Fantasy VI $14.99. The two listings we read say nothing about offline play either way.

- Free, and you like action: Eternium. Just finish the content download before you leave Wi-Fi.
- Free, and you like turn-based fights: Vampire’s Fall: Origins.
- Nothing to pay and nothing to watch: Andor’s Trail. No adverts and no shop.
- One fair price for a long game: Exiled Kingdoms. You can play about 30 hours before deciding whether to pay.
